Roulette is one of the oldest casino games, and its rules fit on a postcard. This page explains the wheel, the bets and the arithmetic that stays the same however the ball falls.
A ball is spun against a wheel with numbered pockets coloured red and black, plus one or two green zeros depending on the version. Before the spin ends you place chips on the layout to back where the ball will land. Once it settles in a pocket, bets on that number or group of numbers win and all others lose. The version you play matters, because a wheel with two zeros takes a bigger share than one with a single zero, so read the rules shown on the table.
Bets on the layout fall into two families, and the main difference between them is risk.
These cover single numbers or small groups. They pay more but win rarely.
These cover large groups, such as red or black, odd or even, or high or low. They win more often and pay less.
The green pocket makes even-money bets lose slightly more than half the time, which is where the edge comes from.
Each table sets a minimum and maximum stake. Check these on screen before you sit.
Every spin is independent, so no staking pattern can alter the long-run result.
Five reds in a row do not make black due. The wheel does not remember.
Progressive staking raises how much you risk and runs into table limits and your own budget.
